This idea is handy if you use Labels X from Unsanity. If you would like to mark specific files to be deleted, kept, modified, rated with stars ala iTunes or whatever you can dream up, just do what I've done.
In the Labels X prefpane, set the first colour to Black (this will "label" the file but not change it's colour) using the colour picker, then just drag the black "colour well" to the next "colour well" and repeat to the fifth one. Colour the next one Green and the last one Red.
In the names field of the first label, using the Character Palette (see other tips), drag a star from Dingbats. Copy this star and paste it twice in the next label name and continue until you get to the fifth one. Drag a tick and a cross into the final two respectively.
The contextual menu item for Labels X doesn't seem to like unicode characters such as the ones in Dingbats, but that's OK, you can overlook that, for the Finder does display unicode properly! Now your files can be rated 1 to 5 or marked with a tick to keep or a cross to delete.
With the label menu in the Finder list view window you can sort by rating or whatever scheme you decide to choose.
