Saving inline images from Mail Apps
In Mail app, there is a problem with graphics that are 'in-line' (embedded in the message). If you receive one of these messages, you may not be able to use the "Save attachment..." menu item. The following solution is the result of a number of members of our local Mac usergroup working on the problem:
  1. From File, select Save as...
  2. Use whatever file name and location you want, and from the pop-up, pick "Raw message source".
  3. Go to the Finder and drag the file you just saved to Suffit-Expander (which I have on the Dock)
After Expander is done, you will find the extracted image on your desktop.

[Editor's note: Sent as an anonymous hint, you can also "pretend you're going to forward the images to someone (by hitting the forward button) and then either drag the icon to the desktop, or click to open in your default image program." I haven't tried this myself, but it may well work.]

Drag&Drop efficient enough
Authored by: Palijn on Oct 22, '02 10:33:12AM

Why not simply Drag and Drop the image into the folder you want to?
May be your Desktop, or any folder accessible in a snap with Spring Folders in jaguar...

Alternatively, you may double-click on the image and it will open in Preview. From which you can as easily select "Save As" or even "Export" if you want to alter the file format.

Not always. I've seen images that would not drag out of a message. Not sure why. It may be that some emailers include them in some incompatible way?

This is a timely tip, since I just ran into one of these today!

Image files w/o extensions
Authored by: tomem on Oct 22, '02 06:53:05PM

The attachment that caused me trouble was a .png file with no extension to tell what it was. It wouldn't drag and drop or open with click. Using this tip, I was able to get it out on the desktop and open it with GraphicConverter and identify what kind of file it was.

Great tip!

Drag&Drop efficient enough

Drag and drop won't work if the image has become part of the body of the document (as in it's now an html document).

It depends on the originating e-mail program and how the attachment was placed. The attachment can't be selected (as an object) or dragged.

Another method...

I've added it to the main body as well, but you can also try this, sent by an anonymous tipster:
If you're trying to save inline images in OSX's Mail application, pretend you're going to forward the images to someone (by hitting the forward button) and then either drag the icon to the desktop, or click to open in your default image program.
