Quickly send files with Mail or Entourage Apps
This might seem VERY obvious to some but since I didn't find it in the hints archive I thought I'd post it.

I just discovered that you can quickly send attachments just by dropping the file either on Entourage's or Mail.app's icon. You will get a new message window only waiting for the recipient's address, with the file attached. Fast and neat. :-)

[Editor's note: Amazing ... thousands of hours of OS X use, and had I ever tried this? Nope! Cool tip!]

I never knew that. Guess I'll start dragging stuff all over the place to see what else I can do... :)

Eudora, too...

Dropping a file onto the Eudora icon in the dock creates a new message with the file attached, and the file's name as the Subject line.

Cool hint -- and what would be...
Authored by: barrysharp on Oct 16, '02 03:35:26PM

even cooler would be that if the object to dropped onto the Mail Dock icon contained a To: and Subject: line that the Mail program quietly and without any further ado send the mail message off to its destination.

That is, say a simple text file as follows would be shunted off quickly and not require any user inputs at all.

To: 1112223333@mobile.att.net
Subject: Meet today
Let's meet at Barney's for a working lunch at noon today -barry

but you would have to open a text editor to create that text file no? why not just open your mail program?

With Mail.app It works only with some files or some images.
It refuse others but I don't manage to find out the principles.

This works in OS X since Jaguar. It actually also worked in OS 9, at least with Eudora.

an add on to this is if you have a mail message open, like one you are replying to and want to add an attachment. This trick will attach the files to that message! Very handy.

You can also open files with apps other than the default the same way. For instance, PDF default to the Acrobat icon (anyone know where to change that?) Draggin' it to the Preview app icon opens it there. (kinda like Open With... without the waiting). I also use it to open Preview Jpgs directly into Photoshop.
