Temporarily override volume key sound setting System
If you have switched off sound feedback (System Prefs -> Sound) for when you change the volume using the keyboard, you can get temporary feedback by holding down Shift when you press the keyboard volume keys.

Just in case you are ever unsure whether your keyboard is disconnected, or your screen is off and you want to adjust the volume when not playing any sound.

If you have feedback on, SHIFT will temporarily turn it off.

Holding down option and hitting a volume key will open sound in the System Prefs.
