Mute the system restart beep System
Not really a OS X hint but handy. If you mute the sound via the System Prefs or keyboard before you restart, the following startup chime will be muted. This works in both 10.2 and 9.2. Nice if you have speakers hooked up to the audio outputs turned up real loud.

You know what I miss? The ability to lower the volume of the startup chime with an AppleScript in my shutdown items folder, and then bring it back up with a script in my startup items folder. It doesn't seem that the new AppleScript provides the ability to control sound volume, or am I missing something? And is there a not too complex way to schedule events for shutdown time?

Has anyone found a way to automate this kind of volume control in X?

Actually, there was a bug introduced in 10.2.1, such that even when my PowerBook is muted, I will still hear the startup chime.
