Use iChat to create better Address Book photos Apps
Sometimes I want only parts of photos to show up in my Address Books contacts list. But Address Book only lets you select a photo as a whole, so you'd have to edit or crop your photo first for the desired results.

But I found that using iChat, you can edit info on a buddy in the buddy list and select a new photo in the same drag and drop manner. But when you select the photo in iChat, it allows you to resize and crop part of photo for use as the buddy icon. This icon is also copied over to the Address Book. So I add a contact to iChat from my Address Book using a fake AIM address. The I can select the photo using this technique, saving me the need to edit or crop photos by hand.

Be sure to remove the person from your Buddy List when done and remove the AIM info from the Address Book to prevent invalid info. Not all that great of a hint, but I thought it was kinda cool.

Why not Address Book?

I love how iChat allows you to select a portion of the photo for your buddy icon! What totally baffles me is why Address Book does not work the same way. Was this just a huge oversight on Apple's part? Seems like the two apps are inconsistent in some respects, even though Address Book is supposed to be the global database. Would have been nice if Apple included that same function in Addess Book. Maybe the next rev?

Another Solution (easier)

I just open the picture I want, command-shift-4 and choose the part of that picture I want. Then just drag pdf from desktop to address book

those Mail/AddressBook/iChat pics

This is true, iChat does a slicker job of making those Address Book TIFFs than Address Book itself. Many of my contacts have AIM, and I was able to start populating my Address Book quickly this way.

For your contacts who are more into email, the best results still come from dropping good TIFFs of your people into ~/Library/Images/People/. Name the files by their email addresses, and add .tiff on the ends. and Address Book will pick them up automatically, and iChat should if a Buddy has that email account entered. As a bonus, display this folder as Icons, turn on icon previews, and you've got a mini-photo album ;)

[Incidently, iChat and Address Book under Jaguar now keep their separate, private stash of TIFFs at ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Images/. They have cryptic names based on your Ethernet ID(!) and who knows what else. Your iChat pics, and the pics that Address Book made for you (by clicking/dropping on the headshot icon) will be in there, somewhere.]

Hint: If you're taking care to make a pic manually in Photoshop, GC, or what-have-you, reduce your giant square-cropped photo to 64 x 64 and save it as an LZW-compressed Mac-ordered TIFF. We know TIFF is the format that these X apps really like.

Why LZW-compressed then? To have nice small pics to trade using the MailPictures add-on, natch. robg hinted at this freeware bundle back in December. If you hadn't heard of MailPictures, get it and add it to your Your inner geek will love you for it.
