A fast way to start software update checks Desktop
Option click on the Software Update icon in the System Preferences window and it will start updating right away, regardless of your settings.

[Editor's note: A very useful trick for those of us who keep our update settings on manual; saves both mouse movement and a mouse click!]

This didn't work for me on either my desktop or PowerBook (running OS 10.1.5). Is it an OS-2 feature only?

I'm running FruitMenu on an iMac running 10.2.1 and I found that this does not work from the Fruit Menu sub-menu. It only worked if System preferences were open.
