Possible iTunes mini Easter Egg Apps
This is an Easter Egg (or who knows, maybe it's a "feature") that has, as far as I know, been in iTunes since 1.0. I tested it again today with 3.0.1, and it's still there. As far as I know, this is completely undocumented.

Open iTunes and then select "About iTunes..." from the application menu. The text scrolls upwards, but if you hold the Option key, the text will scroll backwards. You can even tap the Option key if you like, to "scratch" the text along with your music, like a DJ would a record.

[Editor's note: This has absolutely no effect on my iTunes 3.01 installation in 10.2.1 on my G4/733 with the Apple keyboard. But it worked as described on our iBook. Odd!]

The option key reverse scroll in the about box appears in many apps on OS X. I would guess that it comes "free of charge" within one of apple's library.

I'd hardly call that an easter egg. Wasn't even worth reporting about.

DUDE you can SCRATCH the about box TO THE MUSIC!!!! Don't you GET it?

Incidentally, the scratching about box switches direction about 3 times as fast as a terminal window responds to a key event. Maybe the switching about box team can get together with the terminal team for lunch? just a thought

Actually, you could call it worth posting, considering how strict Apple has been regarding easter eggs in their software.

I'm not a serious developer, but I do know that this has been a part of "about boxes" since system 8. Just about any app that has scrolling credits in it's about box will either change direction or speed of scrolling if the user holds down any one of the modifier keys. Not really an easter egg at all.

I think you can do this in Apple works too. And Quicktime Movie App. One key usually makes the text scroll speed up, the other makes it change directions and/or scroll backwards. I guess it's just a way to control the scrolling credits if someone were to be looking for something in them?

Well, at least it brought someone some amusement. :-)

Actually I think I have an explanation for the it not working on different machines...
the option key is a key used with universal Access, if the options are turned on some keys (keypad for example) will not have the same fonction as usual. It could be true for the about box.
