Launch iChat from your browser Apps
Try to type ichat: in your browser and press "enter". It opens Ichat. Works with IE, Icab, and maybe others.

[Editor's note: This won't work in Mozilla without a bit of work ... using the same technique as described in this hint, add a new helper for "ichat" and point it at the iChat application and select the "Use current application" checkbox. Quit and restart Mozilla and you can now use the same trick.]

If you are allergic to Microsoft solutions and you want to change internet helper and protocol apps you may be interested in the monkeyfood.com solutions.

As far as i can tell the initial offering was a program called "Vince". Then people started to complain that the app wasnt trendy enough and needed to be made into a PreferencePane. Then came "More Internet".

I find that i need a combination of both to get things right. "Vince" does not have the ability to create new protocol references, so i have to use "More Internet". But "More Internet" doesnt handle drag and drop very well, so i have to use "Vince" to change the application for a previously defined protocol.

I find using two applications much better than using a Microsoft application.

Also try "sherlock:", "ical:" and "addressbook:".

I pretty much tried everything else after reading this great hint and nothing else seems to work.

Thanks for a great hint and a great site.

I like this hint, but there's one thing that puzzles mea...Now, I know I can make my AIM launch, initialize an instant message or a chat, at write a specified phrase automatically straight from my browser. Now that we've got these fancy new internet protocols...shouldn't there be a way to have somebody click a link and have iChat just automatically create a new chat?

I suspect that this protocol was created so that iChat could integrate better with Address Book and Mail. Rememeber that you can click on the chat icon in Mail to open up iChat and instant message them. You can do the same using Address Book.
