Fix Word unexpected quits in 10.2 Apps
I've had a problem with unexpected quits when using Word from MS Office v.X (with service update 1) on both my laptop and desktop since upgrading to 10.2. The problem arises when opening or editing existing Word documents created under 10.1.5 or earlier. It seems that the docs themselves break after opening for the first time in 10.2. Fortunately, the fix is an easy one:
  1. Open the offending document (it took me several tries to get it on screen without crashing).
  2. From the tool bar, click the "ΒΆ" button to reveal all paragraph locations.
  3. Select all text EXCEPT the FINAL paragraph symbol (turns out Word uses this last symbol to carry the bulk of the formatting info for the document).
  4. Paste all the text into a newly created blank document.
  5. Do a File -> Save As.
  6. Trash the old, damaged document.
That's it - the newly created document should now behave perfectly.

WordX in OS10.2
Authored by: howard123 on Sep 17, '02 01:48:20PM

I find that Word closes up on me very often in OSX102 even in new documents started in 10.2. This seems to occur even more frequently since I installed Endnote 6 beta version. Has any one else had trouble with Word and Endnote?
Thanks

I discovered the SAME THING!!! I chucked the Word that I installed the Trial Version of EndNote on and reinstalled Word again...without installing EndNote.

Regarding the Word crashes on 10.2, I've noticed that opening *.txt files kills Word. *.doc files work fine, so far.

WordX in OS10.2

I, too, have had Word crash frequently on me in 10.2. It happens most often after I've called up the Page Setup dialog box, specified the printer, and checked the margins in "page attributes." My practice is to Save immediately after clicking "ok," and in the process of saving, Word "unexpectedly quits" and I have to restart. Sometimes Word quits in the middle of nothing in particular. Also, I've had documents corrupted while they're being opened. This last problem is something that only rarely, if ever, happened under 10.1, and prior versions (Word 98, Word 5.1, etc.). Also, after printing many copies of a not particularly complicated document, Word has slowed to such a crawl that I've actually been forced to reboot, as quitting Word and relaunching it doesn't seem to cure the problem.

I've got other complaints about Entourage that aren't germane here.

So, what do we do?

Had to Reinstall Office.x

Most of my problems have been with Excell. Since updating to 10.2 my excell documents kept creeping up under the menu bar, making working with them difficult. I tried turning on menus, resizing my screen. Nothing worked. Finnally, I just used the Uninstall Office application that comes with Office, and then reinstalled fresh from the CD and applied the ServicePack 1 to the install.
<P>
Documents are staying where they are supposed to say . . . for now.

I keep looking for a bug fix for Office under 10.2. There are clearly some real problems, but so far, nothing about it from M$.

Office v.X failing after OSX 10.2 install
Authored by: cookiejarvis on Sep 17, '02 11:47:22PM

After installing OSX 10.2, the entire Office package crashes during the \"optimizing font menu preference\" splashscreen startup. Is there some sort of new Microsoft license security measure or hidden pref file wreaking havoc here? Fortunately, the OS9 version still works fine.

Possible that you have a slightly dodgy font in there that it doesn't like. OS X apps seem to be rather prone to choking if there is somethinhg amiss with a font they are trying to use.
