Instant restart and logout with the option key Desktop
I just noticed tonight, and I'm not sure if this is a 10.2 thing or not, that you can avoid the extra dialog box when you select either Restart... or Log Out... from the Apple menu. If you hold down the option key while selecting the Apple menu, you'll see that the "..." after both those commands has vanished (release and press the option key to see the dots appear and vanish).

So with the option key down, both of those choices happen without any additional dialogs or delays. You can also see the shortcut for the immediate logout when you're holding the option key down: pressing shift-command-option-Q will result in an immediate logout.

Addendum: After publishing the original hint above, an anonymous tipster submitted these keyboard shortcuts: "You can use Control-Command and the eject (or F12) key for an immediate restart, Option-Command and the eject (F12) key for sleep mode, and Control-Option-Command and eject (F12) for shutdown."

Also a benefit of FruitMenu ...

This is also something you can institute into your Apple menu with FruitMenu ... instant restarts and shutdowns.

Also a benefit of FruitMenu ...

I use Fruitmenu, but I usually press control-eject to bring up the dialog.

But if you don't want the dialog you can press control-cmd-eject to restart, this is like the old "three finger salute" except on OS X it does a regular reboot, and not a forced one.

You can also press control-option-cmd-power to shut down. I haven't used these last two in Jaguar, but they should still work.

No Instant logout!

FruitMenu is great but in this case it disables the Instant Logout! Holding down option has no effect on the menu item elipsis and apple-option-shift-Q does nothing. I'll keep FruitMenu for the rest of the benefits but too bad this shortcut isn't available.
:(

More shortcuts: Save As PDF, Show Inspector
Authored by: cornsyrupkills on Sep 14, '02 11:10:38PM

Hey nice tip! I also noticed that you can toggle other "option" menu items by pressing the option key. The words in the menus actually change. For example, in OmniWeb, "Save As..." becomes "Save As PDF" while "Close Window" becomes "Close All Windows." The other menus in the Finder are affected too. Try it out. "Get Info" becomes "Show Inspector" and "Bring All to Front" changes to "Arrange in Front." I'm sure this works for other apps as well.

And to force logout
Authored by: sitharus on Sep 14, '02 11:32:27PM

use command-option-control-shift-Q. I haven't tested this. According to the Apple OS X 10.2 Human Interface Guidelines, this should do an immediate force logout. I guess it could be useful if a fullscreen app that covers the force quit dialog has crashed, or a user level background app won't quit.

and in iTunes3

The "+" button creates a regular playlist. With "option" key pressed, this button changes to a cog symbol and clicking it creates a Smart Playlist.

my dialog went away by itself!
Authored by: lastobelus on Sep 15, '02 03:26:01PM

After swearing at it profusely over the last couple weeks, the inane dialog spontaneously left my system. It will not be missed.

I was developing in WebObjects and WOBuilder started crashing on launch. So I restarted, and ... no dialog. And it hasn't come back. Shortly later, my delete key stopped working. All other keys still worked, but delete key produced an alert sound. Restarting fixed that too.

Jaguar is...weird.

Now if only the incredibly inane "Software update has cancelled restart because you need to restart to use your new software" would spontaneously go away. Somebody at Apple has flies in their eyes.

This does not work on my powerbook g3/firewire.
I am running 10.2.1 client.
Strange. Could someone else try this on their PB?

Instant restart and logout with the option key
Authored by: johnsawyercjs on Aug 07, '04 05:31:23PM

For me, moving my left hand to press the Option key while selecting Restart or Shut Down takes as about as much time as using my right hand to press the Return key after selecting the standard Restart and Shut Down commands, since the time delay dialog window's default for pressing the Return key is to immediately restart or shut down.

What I'd like to see is how to set immediate Restart or Shut Down as the default for these menu commands, or to be able to set the delay time yourself. Maybe it's in a plist file somewhere?
