Print to an HP JetDirect print server in 10.2 System
I have an Okidata OL810e PCL5e PostScript-compatible parallel-port printer (which came with HP LaserJet 4 emulation built-in) attached to an HP JetDirectEX Print Server. These are the steps that I followed to set this printer up under Jaguar, Mac OS 10.2. I hope this saves other people a lot of grief.
  1. Open Print Center.
  2. Hold down the alt/option key and click the "Add" button.
  3. Choose "Advanced" in the topmost list box.
  4. In the "Device" list box, select "AppSocket/HP Jet Direct", without the quotes.
  5. In the Device Name box, enter a meaningful name. I typed "JETDIRECTEX".
  6. In the "Device URI:" box, it should be prefilled with the words "socket://". Here is where you type the IP address of your JetDirect Print Server. When I completed the box it read (without the quotes, of course) "socket://192.168.0.50"
  7. Printer Model List Box: Here you may have to experiment. My Okidata printer worked only with the "ESP" drivers, name of "HP LaserJet Series".
The Printer Model is the critical part. If you don't select the most correct driver, you'll experience what I did: page after page of PCL code printing instead of that term paper!

Printing via HP JetDirect 500 in 10.2

I set up my HP 3330 LaserJet in a similar way to the previous post about printing via a HP JetDirect printserver and it all worked fine accepting print jobs from all our Macs and VPC. my problem is to get print jobs to my HP 1220C through the same printserver as this is a three port printserver. Whatever I do, the jobs goes to the 3330, as that is connected to port 1. Any ideas?
The next problem is how to get a firmware update into the same printserver, as using VPC will not work. HELP!!!

socket://x.x.x.x:9101 refers to the second port and
socket://x.x.x.x:9102 should refer to the third port.

I dont know if it will work using virtual pc, but try using HP JetDirect WebAdmin. It allows you to update the firmware on each jetdirect print server via internet explorer... After you install the latest firmware you should be able to access the print server via any web browser.

Hi,

using the WebJetAdmin Tool doesn't work with VPC 5.01 - however :-(
The solution is: get a friend with a Windows-Box and do it with the Windows-Box.

I also tried to use this tool to update the firmware from 7.03 to 8.49, but as mentioned before - not with VPC 5.01....

So I only have a JetDirect 500 X with firmware 7.03.

I can print to a at port 2 connected HP LJ 4050 via AppSocket/HP Jet Direct.

But I also want to use a to port 1 connected OfficeJet G85.
Does anybody know how to do that?
HP AIO doesn't work, and I don't see an appropriate HP-Printer in the List "Select Printer Model".

And if I try to connect to the Embedded WebServer of the HP JetDirect 500 X it only answers: "Macintosh OS is not supported to run this application."

There is a thread where people talked about how they got around various issues with that stupid javascript. Look at the source code; javascript check for 'Macintosh' right in there. Easiest way I found was to use OmniWeb's compatibility prefpane and set it to Windows IE 5.5.

I have an HP Jetdirect 500ex workng with 2 printers connected. One is a HP 990 and the other is a laserjet 5MP. Both show up under apppletalk network. I have another setup with a Epson 750 and laserjet 5MP. The Epson was not seen with appletalk, so I had to use the advanced option. Non postscript printers did not work unless they were connected to port 9100. Let me know how ot turns out.

Re: VPC. Don't be so sure it's VPC's fault; I tried the update both on VPC (first, of course) and on a bona-fide win2k3 machine and it just ... sat ... there. After some time on the phone with JetDirect tech support, they advised me to reset the JetDirect (power cycle, hold down the 'test' button for > 10 seconds) ONLY AFTER printing out the normal 'test' info pages, of course! and once I'd 'wiped its memory', THEN I was able to update the firmware. Might be worth a shot.

If the print server is password-protected, how should I input the password ?

Thanks for any helping hand...

This also works with other network print servers and information like this should really be more readily available from Apple. I admit it I'm a newb. I have been pulling my hair out trying to get a reliable connection to my printer.

I've got an HP DeskJet 5650 connected to a TRENDnet TE100-MP1U networked through my wireless router. This hint worked first try with MacOS 10.3.9. Beautiful!

The only issue now is that loading/updating my printer driver doesn't seem to work, so I'm using a arbitrary HP printer driver included on the Mac, but that's an issue for a different thread and/or for HP.
