More things to do with the font preview pane System
In this hint, Mikey-San points out how to activate font previews in 10.2. macosxhints reader jasenko points out that you can also activate the preview pane by simply dragging downward just below the title bar of the fonts window (command-T in Cocoa applications).

In addition, Gwynne offers that you can click on the sample text in the preview area and replace it with any string you like. This gives you a way to preview the actual look of the string you're working with in a number of fonts without actually activating them first.
