Start semi-permanent chat rooms in iChat

Not only can you start individual or group chats in iChat by inviting others off your buddy list, but you can start a "standing" chatroom as well.

  1. Choose "Go To Chat" from the File menu and enter a name for your room. An empty chat room opens. If the name you chose was chosen already by someone else for their room, you end up in their room so it pays to come up with unique room names.

  2. Notify whoever you want to join of the room name and they can join by entering using "Go To Chat" with your new room name.
The room persists as long as at least one of you (it does not have to be the one who started the room) does not leave. As far as I know, there is no central listing of open chat rooms, which provides some welcome privacy.

[Editor's note: Very interesting ... a cheap and easy way to run a semi-permanent chat room if you're not interested in figuring out IRC (although much more limited in features, obviously).]
