Excel v.X and Excel98 problem and workaround Apps
If you create a spreadsheet in Excel v.X, it will work fine with pretty much any version of Office under Windows. But oddly enough, Office 98 under OS 9 will complain "Not enough memory" and refuse to open the file. This is true regardless of how much memory you allocate to Office 98 and what Excel format you save as from Office X (although really simple formats like CSV do work).

The only solution I've found to this is to open the file on a Windows machine and resave it. The version/format is not important - it just has to be opened and resaved from a Windows box - then it will open properly under Office 98 for OS 9.

Other suggestions that don't involve going through Windows are very welcome.

[Editor's note: I haven't booted in OS 9 since early in 2001 so I can't easily test this hint myself (anyone else?). However, running Excel98 in Classic under 10.2, I had no problems opening any Excel v.X spreadsheets that I tested.]

That problem was present in the original version of OfficeX and was corrected in the recent service release

Hopefully the author will let us know if they have installed the service pack or not.

Non-windows workaround

I ran into this some time back. For those who may not have the service pack installed: I just did a "Save As..." and saved it as a different format. Not sure which, but perhaps Excel 5.0/95 format. It didn't occur to me at the time this was "hint" material, just your usual file format headaches.

Excel 98, Open file, Out of Memory
Authored by: sshears on Sep 11, '02 08:53:41AM
In the comments so far, some people see the "Out of Memory" problem, others don't.

I believe the "Out of Memory" problem is an OLD bug in Excel 98 and is solved by applying one of the Office 98 updaters.

I just went through this. For those using Office 98 in Classic (and it works fine!), go to http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/default.asp?navindex=s10 and apply the relevant updates, in order, from the bottom to the top. One of these solves the out of memory problem.
