Setting up an Epson 3000 with CUPS in 10.2 System
I was expecting Jaguar to be able to print with my old Epson 3000 and the new CUPS but it was not quite so easy. After much work on many sites, here's how I got the Epson 3000 working (this should work for any Epson Stylus with an Ethernet card).

- Download and install Gimp-Print. Also read this article about USB printing using the Gimp-Print on allosx.com. It has a good amount of screenshots of what you need to do. After installing the package, reboot your Mac.

The trick on the 3000 is to know the config of the ethernet card (remember, you have bought it a long time ago!) reset and configure again the ethernet card:

- Press the small black button at the back of the printer for three seconds and be sure to have some paper loaded before in the tray. The printer will print out the full information about your printer, such as Netware, TCP/IP config, NetBUI, etc.

- Download the old EpsonNet app and run it under OS9. Configure DHCP if you have one, or enter your TCP/IP parameters. If you use DHCP, be sure to copy the adress and close eveything.
Because epson will not release any more versions of this software, I suggest you keep it on a safe place if you want configure the printer again!

- Finally, you only have to go back to the Print Center, add a printer and choose the IP adress you had previously copied. The name will be the adress of the printer. After testing, change it to the name you want. You can also press "Option" when adding a new priner to have the "Advanced Options" if it doesn't work or if you want to specify the adress manually.

That's all; I hope it will help!

[Editor's note: I realize we've run a lot of 10.2/CUPS printing articles, but they're all slightly different in their approaches to the problem. Given the early stage we're at with 10.2, I'm (in general) opting to publish too much info rather than not enough info!]

Anyone tried this with 1520?
Authored by: leenoble_uk on Sep 06, '02 01:19:39PM

I know this hint has only just gone up but has anyone tried doing this with a 1520?
I can't install Jag at the moment on my main computer as I'm at a mission critical time with a particular project and can't afford to lose MySQL or PHP compatibility for a minute. All these CUPS hints and other goodies are filling my head with ideas that I may get my hardware working again :-) but I currently can't devote any time to trying them all out :-(
The other thing is, I don't have ethernet card on my 1520, don't even know where I can get one, or how much they cost so if someone could confirm this works then that's another thing I can look into getting fixed.
In the meantime, jaguar is sitting in a box taunting me from the shelf.

Curse you god, for making me this way. [obscure cultural reference, not blaspheming]

Anyone tried this with 1520?

If your 1520 has a parallel port, you can get Epson's USB/Parallel cable (C-USB PK4) which may be a whole lot cheaper than getting an enet card. I had a Keyspan cable connecting my SC600 to my iBook and while it offered me a solution for OS 9, this cable was not good for CUPS printing; Print Center would not recognize the printer. Replacing the Keyspan cable with an Epson original solved the problem and can now use my old sc600 with the iBook.

1520 success

My 1520 runs quite nicely with the drivers from Gimp-print. Alas, it does not work directly from Adobe apps like Illustrator or Photoshop, you have to go through a two-step process of printing to pdf, then opening in Preview.app to print. The gimp-print project says they're working on this problem. For now, I can print quite nicely from apps like Mozilla, although I noticed a few bugs like transparent gifs aren't transparent (hard to tell if this is a Moz bug or gimp-print). I couldn't get the 1440 mode to run well, it had excessively dark output, so dark it soaked through the paper, but 720 works pretty well.
MacOS X is chock full 'o Unixy goodness. The CUPS system is built around regular lpr printing, and a real postscript rip like Ghostscript could easily be built into a printer queue. I'm just installing the new release of gimp-print on my brand new dual-1Ghz, machine, I'll report how it goes.
This may seem like a lot of trouble for an old color printer, but I love the 1520 exactly because it doesn't have all the fancy color matching systems with 6-color inks like the new models. I use it for CMYK proofing and it's perfect just for that task. I occasionally use a special UV-opaque ink that can print black on acetate to make 55-linescreen negatives, it's like a mini-imagesetter. I love my 1520!

Oh.. I suppose I should mention.. Like Frank suggested, I'm using the Epson USB cable, it plugs into the 1520's parallel port. The 1520 must be on and ready when you boot your Mac, or CUPS will not recognize it.

It works for my 850Ne!

Thanks for this hint!

I downloaded and installed GIMP, then did the printcenter setup and it worked like a champ. I set up the fixed IP stuff with the Epson Mac Assist program, on a different OS9 system.

Using Epsonnet

I found you don't need to boot Classic and run epsonnet. Just enter the IP address of your printer into a web browser and the network card provides you with a setup environment similar to the one used by CUPS itself.
