Change the dock's trashcan icon Desktop
The trash can icon (as well as the URL icon) is located in the dock application bundle itself as a standalone icon. This is a change from 10.1, where it was deeply buried in a .rsrc file. To replace it, simply move a "trashempty.png" and a "trashfull.png" into the resource folder of the dock.app bundle. Back up the original one by adding something like "BACKUP" to the filename; you'll have to be root or change the permissions first.

If you have existing .icns trash icons, you can open them with Preview and export them as *.png files; it's as easy as that.

This works without restarting the dock; emptying the trash is enough.

Works, but is flawed BIG TIME

If you change the PNG's and add trash it will change, but everytime you login it wil be back to normal until you add trash again. Even if you change the new Hitoolbox.rsrc --> which is the SystemIcons.rsrc located in the Systemicons.bundle folder it still changes back every time you logout. The only sure way to change the trash for real so far that I can see is CandyBar.

Go to /Library/Caches, remove
com.apple.dock.iconcache.<your login name here>
and you're set.
