Play all iTunes songs at least one time Apps
If, like me, you have about six days' worth of music on your machine, and would like to make sure you listen to most of it, then just create a smartlist with number of times played being equal to 0 (File -> New Smart Playlist). Make sure live updating is on. When you hear a song you like, rate it by control-clicking on the iTunes icon in the dock. Make another playlist for all rated songs, and you have a good way to gather your best songs together.

[Editor's note: This is a good way to get around iTunes' "semi-random" play mode. Our CD collection ripped to about 2500 songs. I have one album by Yaz in that collection ... yet I hear a song from the Yaz album every day!. With the smart playlist based on times played, at least that will end after the first week.]

Does anyone know if the ipod updates "last song played" etc (vs. using itunes)?

Smart Playlists needs one more feature so so bad.

If you could tell it to populate lists in reverse order, it would be perfect for my needs. For example, you could tell it to show you 4.5 GB of songs that have been played the least. That would be pretty perfect for my iPod...

And no, the iPod does not update smart playlists. It's a little too bad, but whatever.

iPod DOES update last played!

Actually, the iPod does update the "last played" tag under 1.2. You just need
to make sure it's set to "auto-sync" for it to work. I use it all the time to generate random playlists. After I've listened to them on my iPod, I sync it to iTunes and get new playlists for the day, all automatically!

However, this feature didn't work all the time at first; songs would update 2 times out of three. Doing a system restore of the iPod fixed the problem.

Random

iTunes works just like SoundJam work(ed). It creates a random list for you to play and will not re-randomize unless you tell it to or it runs to the end of the list. To tell it to re-randomize, option click on the shuffle button.
