Enable user interface sound effects Desktop
There's very little coverage of this feature yet that I've found, but in 10.2 if you go to the Sound panel in System Prefs, you can turn on 'Play user interface sound effects'. The puff of smoke makes a sound when you remove something from the dock (or menu bar), and there's a clank when you drop items into the trash. Very tasteful, slight things. I hope there are more that I haven't heard yet.

There is the puff noise, there is a noise that happens on emptying the trash, moving stuff to the trash and also opening/closing *certain* windows in the finder. I can't figure out when it happens that well...anyway, this little "reincarnation" of the sound sets from OS9 isn't even close to as cool yet.

I only get the Dock puff, and the thud when I put things in the trash, nothing else.

Yeah I only get the Poof and the drop in trash sounds too! I saw an earlier version of Jaguar which had the remove trash sound enabled [which sounded very like the windows one!]. Does anyone know what might cause some of em to work and others not to? Coz if I look in my HardDisk/system/library/components/coreaudio.component/contents/resources/systemsounds/ and then in one of the following folders: accessibility; dock; finder; ink[!!] or system I can see lots of sounds which dont seem to be playing on my system!

hi there,

any ideas where to assign sounds to a specific event? For example the volume up,down on my iBook used the system alarm sound prior to 10.2 now it's a very unpleasant sound.

TIA
Frank

Ink sound
Authored by: Anonymous on Sep 03, '02 03:24:25PM

The haven't played it yet (nor do I have a native tablet [only an old ADB tablet that won't work throuhg the iMate]) but I suspect that the Ink sound is either a sound as you drag a stroke out (like a fountain pen over paper scratch) or a squeak sound when you press down to begin a selection, like on the Newton (you CAN still do that, can't you! I hope so.)

Ink sound

l AM Writing this with an lntuos 2 tablet From WacoM. So far as 1 can tell, there are two Sounds. One at pen down (longer) 2nd d little Chuff at pen UP.

(Back to keyboard...) Hey, I'm getting better; capitalization interpretation is still bad for me (I mostly block print, and I write "a"s like you see in Helvetica/Arial, not grade-school/AvantGarde). Wonder if my Palm/Graffiti training will conflict with relearning to write for real for this. That was supposed to say "and a little chuff"... though I guess the sound is more like a "whit" (if you remember that old system sound).

I also have very the UI sounds enabled and hear almost nothing. A little click from dropping a New folder in the trash or command-deleting a file (mentioned by others). A shutter/film-wind sound from command-shift-3, but that could perhaps be considered an application sound.

One more time for the folks who didn't catch it:

/System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/SystemSounds

That's where the goodies are. The odd thing is that the finder (mine at least) doesn't appear to be using its sounds. Emptying the trash is silent for me, and moving an item to the trash results in the dock's "drag item to trash" sound being played. Do the finder sounds play for others?
