Use the escape key to stop drag and drops Desktop
In 10.2, the escape key now cancels a drag and drop operation (with a nice visual "return to start" effect, as well). At last!

Cool to see the escape key working but surprised that clicking the Stop button doesn't do the same!!!

Where are you seeing a stop button? And how would you press one if you're in the middle of dragging?

If you use drag & drop to copy something large you get a progress dialog and it has a stop button. Hitting escape works as mentioned above. Clicking stop just stops the transfer leaving whats already copied in place.

In OS9 you can cancel Drag and Drop by dragging to the menu bar and when you drop the item it returns to it's original position, does this work in OSX

In OS X you can (also) drag to the Trash to cancel a drag and drop.
