The same thing works in the Finder's File menu. Select a document, then File, and then press the option key to see the revised menu selections, one of which is "Always Open With."

Shortcut to quickly set the 'Always Open With' app

In Jaguar, choose a document and control-click it to bring up the contextual menu. Now press the option key and the "Open With" item changes into "Always Open With." This makes it easy to change the document type without opening the Info dialog.

Doesn't work for me
I tried that already. I've used it several times with this 1 file. I have 2 different versions of REALbasic (4.5 and 4.5.1fc3) and I want my .rb files to open with 4.5.1fc3, but they always open with 4.5. So I tried the Always Open With trick no less than 4 times, and it would open with 4.5.1fc3 that one time, but after that it would still be set to 4.5. So I tried doing Get Info and changing the Open With application to 4.5.fc3 (and telling it to do that for all .rb files). It opened with 4.5.1fc3 once, and reverted to 4.5. This is much worse behaviour than the annoyances with this on 10.1.5. I hope it's fixed in the next update, because it simply doesn't work for me. Maybe it works with different apps, but for 2 different versions of the same app, it just doesn't work. |
