This is more of a passing along of information than a hint in and of itself, but check out the Jaguar boot image modification instructions put together by Ryan Schmidt. He hacked the BootX file, and can teach others to do the same. If you grow weary of the grey apple boot screen, therein lie your answers.

What about the NSProgressIndicator underneath
Does anyone know how the NSProgressIndicator underneath is created? The screen is displayed before any of the Cocoa frameworks are loaded, so I assume the code for NSProgressIndiacator is buried in the BootX file as well?
