Potential bug and fix in TinkerTool/Finder interaction Desktop
I had been having trouble with the Finder quitting every time I closed one of the "main" windows I normally keep open. The problem seems to have originated from the TinkerTool option "Use desktop," which I had turned off. Turning it back on fixed the problem.

Thanks for this post, I've been trying to figure out what about TinkerTool was the problem. Sadly, unchecking use of the desktop was my favorite TinkerTool feature. According to their listing on VersionTracker there should be a new, fully Jaguar compatible version out in a matter of weeks.

Finder Bug (Not TinkerTool)?

I don't think it's a problem with TinkerTool. Editing com.apple.finder.plist manually to turn off the Desktop causes the same trouble. The relevant key is:

CreateDesktop
That "true" needs to be true, otherwise the flakiness begins. I can crash the Finder 100% of the time by turning off the Dekstop and then choosing Show View Options… from the View menu. Really irritating as turning of the Desktop not only removes clutter, it provides a bit of a speed boost on this old Pismo.

Finder Bug (Not TinkerTool)?

The comment system mangled my HTML (looked OK in the preview). Anyway, here's the correct prefs key:

<key>CreateDesktop</key>
<true/>

I doubt this is a bug. You know how a few applications quit when you close every open window? (See Calculator, Disk Utility.) It sounds like the Finder has been modified to behave this way.

I'm not so sure. I first noticed the wacky Finder behavior when trying to "Customize Toolbar" in the Finder. Every time I tried to select it from the View menu the Finder would crash and automatically relaunch just as it does when you close a window. Not desirable behavior! However, you may be correct that the Finder "crashes" are part of normal behavior for other apps and knowing that Apple engineers could squash this bug easily.
