As I am slightly anal retentive, I hate large numbers of items in any folder. After cleaning up the /Library/Font folder of unnecessary fonts, I had the need to add a particular family of tweleve Type 1 fonts (12 outline and 12 bitmap) to the system.
Instead of copying the fonts themselves, I acidentally copied the enclosing folder to /Library/Fonts. Not realising this, I went back to work on a presentation using the fonts I had just installed. It was not until later in the day when adding some other fonts that I realised what I had done.
I have just cross checked this on 10.1.5, and it doesn't work, so I conclude it is an undocumented (or not easily found in documentation) feature of 10.2.
