Use small icons in toolbars System
Jaguar introduces the concept of small icons to toolbars. If you think that normal toolbar icons are too big, then this feature is for you! Just select "Use Small Icons" from the contextual menu of any toolbar.

Also note that Command-clicking the hide/show toolbar control at the right of the window's titlebar will now cycle through toolbar views as follows:

10.1: icon & text → icon → text
10.2: icon & text → small icon & text → icon → small icon → text → small text

As stated in a previous hint, this Command key trick works in apps like System Preferences that otherwise won't let you change the toolbar view.

[Editor's note: Unfortunately, this does not work in the Finder...]

Cocoa only?

Seeing as this doesn't work in the finder, I'm venturing the guess that it only works on Cocoa applications. Maybe soon a Carbon application that's not the Finder will come by that uses the toolbar, as it's now available to Carbon in Jaguar, and then we can test that.

Path Finder (formaly SNAX, and not released yet, still in beta testing) does this exactly as noted in the tip. its pretty nice to have all these options. Path Finder is all Cocoa, it is feature that Carbon apps do not get.

By cmd-clicking on the widget in the right hand corner of the System Preferences, I was cycled through a few options for that toolbar: normal icon w/text, small icon w/text, icon only, small icon only, text only, closely spaced text only. Cool! Was this in pre-10.2?

That trick was there, but there are more options in 10.2.

Yes, it was already in 10.1.5 and works only for Cocoa applications.

It's been seven years since I first posted this hint, but we've finally got a Cocoa Finder now and sure enough this tip works. ;-)
