We have published hints on the past covering a number of headline news grabbers (Slashdock, PluckyX, MacReporter, etc.). And now here's one more, as today I tried NetNewsWire Lite, a freeware Cocoa-based headline news grabber.
NetNewsWire has an intuitive interface (including a smart use of drawers), indicates the unread headline count in its dcock icon, has a customizable toolbar, and is extremely easy to use. macosxhints is just one of 50 or so sites that are included "out of the box", but it's simple to add others (assuming you know the RSS address). To add macosxapps.com, for example, just select Subscriptions -> Subscribe, and enter "http://www.macosxapps.com/backend/macosxapps.rdf". That's all there is to it. There's even a menu item that links to sites which collect RSS addresses that you can then add to the program.
There are many more features, of course, but I'll let you discover some of them on your own. The author, Brent Simmons, promises that the lite version will always be free; an expected "Pro" version will be paid, but offer additional features (unspecified at this time). I'm impressed with the free version's features; I can't wait to see what he adds to the Pro version!
