Switch PowerBook volume/brightness keys System
Since I need regular access to my TiBook's function keys (F1-F12), I hated the fact that I had to press the modifier key to access F1-F6 (the volume/brightness keys). Since I hardly ever adjust my volume/brightness, this was a poor default config for me.

In OS 9, you can go to the Keyboard Control Panel and switch the function keys to act this way, but Apple's not gotten around to adding this same functionality to OS X. As I was browsing through the Mac NNTP boards, someone mentioned that OS X will obey your OS 9 setting, but you HAVE to boot into OS 9 to set it (just doing it in Classic doesn't work).

Enjoy!

Where does this setting go?
Authored by: porkchop_d_clown on Jul 01, '02 08:36:46AM

<p>When OS 9 sets that preference, where does it go? NVRAM? If that's true, shouldn't the nvram command be able to set it?</p>

I'm pretty sure that setting is in the old PRAM area, which of course is a subset of NVRAM but not key/value addressable like the rest of NVRAM is, so you can't use <nvram> to get/set it. And the APIs to write PRAM weren't Carbonized so one would have a hard time writing a utility that does the equivalent in X.

Lack of functions key button on new TiPB
Authored by: jda on Jul 02, '02 05:54:51AM
I have a 667 TiPB (new) and the OS9 Keyboard Control Panel does not have a functions key button. A quick look in the Help revealed this: "If the function key button is not visible: Your computer does not support hot function keys."

So it seems as though user of the latest PowerBooks are stuck with pressing the fn button and no way of using modifiers with the f keys. Pants.

Are you sure you're booted into OS 9? You will get that message/lack of options if you try the control panel in the classic environment.

You're right, Paul, thankyou. I'd assumed that it was a hardware thing.
Booted in OS 9, changed the settings and it works perfectly.

There is now a way to do this even on the new machines that can't boot into Mac OS 9, use DoubleCommand from http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net/

uControl has a setting called "Real Function keys" that "Removes the need to hold down the fn key to access F1-F6". However, the description also says: "(F5 not working yet. Holding down fn will not put the keys back in their normal state, but it is in the works)."

uControl is a fine piece of software for other things too (including the scroll wheel emulation, making CapsLock act as Control, and it works fine with the recently mentioned SideTrack).

All F1-F6 keys work now with uControl. (v1.3.5 for OS X.2 and v1.4.1 for OS X.3 as of writing)

FYYI, this feature is now available with the 10.3.3 update. see your keyboard item in system preferences. there is a hint on 3/22/05 which describes this in more detail.
