AppleScripts for encoding and decoding files System
Here is a link to some excellent scripting.

These Applescripts, the Mac OS X Encoding Plethora, let you encode or decode items by just dropping them on the script. If the item is already compressed the script will decode it, otherwise it will encode. They are a lot better at working with long filenames and "strange" characters than Aladdin Systems Stuffit Expander.

[Editor's note: Also of note on the above referenced page is AEP, the "Active Extension Processor". AEP allows you to, for example, compress a file by adding ".zip" to its name. You can read more about AEP on its home page. I haven't tried either of these programs yet, but they're both now on my "I need to look at these sometime!" list.]
