Close out of save sheets with the keyboard System
Haven't seen this tip before....

If you try to close a modified document, you'll probably be prompted with a 'save' sheet, giving you the options "Don't Save", "Cancel, or "Save".

"Save", which is higlighted, can be chosen pressing return. "Cancel" can be chosen pressing the "ESC" key. But not many know that to choose the "Don't Save" option, you can press cmd-D. This will close the document without applying any changes.

[Completely non-related editor's note: I'm back from the trip, but arrived much later than expected last night. The remainder of today's site updates will occur this evening...]

Don't save (Command - D) doesn't work in Mail.app.
Authored by: kodiakbr on Jun 24, '02 10:32:13AM

I have tried since I first got the Public Beta to find the shortcut to select "Don't save" when for composing a new email message. Has anyone figured out how to do this...?

Otherwise, Command - D works great with most of the basic OS X apps.

In the case of the Mail.app pane, press the tab key a couple of times (look for aqua halo around Don't Save) and then press the space bar to select it.

For this to work, full keyboard access must be turned on in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences.

Don't you love the escaping of the escaped character?

Old hint

There was a hint about this already.

I can't find it right now but the point was typing Command + the first letter of any button would work. This for any time an alert box comes up.

yes, and for some applications, like Photoshop, you don't have to press Command either.

Same thing with the Shutdown dialog: ESC for Cancle, R for Restart, S for Sleep and Enter for Shutdown.

yeah beastie I agree - this is old as the hills and has been around for quite some time now before OS X was even a thought on little Stevie's mind....

I've been looking/wishing for that keyboard command for a long time! That's been a well kept secret I never see in documented keyboard shortcuts.
