Quick fix for modem disconnect problems System
I have had a frequent problem with the modem trying to disconnect from a server and getting hung up with a message "disconnecting" and it never finishes. Quitting or force quitting brings it right back to the same place when Internet Connect is restarted. The only solution I could find was to restart the computer. But I just discovered that if you put the machine to sleep and then wake it up again, the modem is disconnected so you can try dialing again.

[Editor's note: I don't know if the recent Networking system update will have any impact on this problem, which I have seen reported elsewhere.]

This did not work for me under 10.2.4 and Bluetooth connection.
I still have to reboot. :(

sleep doesn't work 4 me, either, but i've found that i can recover use of the modem w/o a reboot:

when the isp goes away (without pppd noticing...all is well when it does;-), open internet connect,
uncheck display status in menubar, hit disconnect. when that hangs, kill i.c.

i got a crash report (systemUIwhatsit...i'll send it 2 apple when i get a chance;-) but i got the modem back:-)

Putting my mac to sleep didn't work, and neither did the internet connect program help.

What worked for me was i have to open Activity Monitor, and quit pppd AND modemd. Quitting those two programs brings back the modem, and I can re-connect.
