If you are installing the newly-release SR1 for Office v.X, be aware that it may kill your existing registration information. If this happens to you, to complete the installation you will need to re-enter your CD Key number from the original CD.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you purchased an upgrade CD, the installation is going to ask you to browse to the folder containing the version of Office that you are upgrading from. If you're like me, Office 2001 and OS9 are long since history.
It took a call to Microsoft support, but the answer is to find your original Office 2001 CD, mount it to the desktop, then navigate to the Office 2001 folder on the CD when prompted to do so during the upgrade verification step of the installation process.
[Editor's note: I have now upgraded Office v.X on two different machines, both of which were installed with upgrade CD's, and I have not been asked for my registration information in either case. I'm not sure what triggers this behavior, but it has been reported by a number of people.]
