Change the startup chime volume System
Ever since I got my Soundsticks, the startup chime that is played when you switch the computer on has been so loud that it hurt my ears. Changing the volume in OS X before shutdown doesn't affect anything.

The solution is to boot into OS 9 and adjust the volume there.

I've experimented the following since 1.1 to 10.4:
1. shutdown from login panel : whatever you do the Bang sound will be there.
2. shutdown from a session:
- set the sound to "mute" (mute key :-) you won't get the Bang sound.
- if the sound volume is not in mute the Bang will hit your ears.

Really? For me muting it before shutdown does nothing. If I want no sound, I have to set the volume to its lowest before shuting down...

This problem used to exist in 10.0 but it's supposedly been fixed since 10.1.
