Rename the trash can in the Finder Desktop
This is further to the hint which details how to rename the Trash in the Dock. This new hint as such 'localises' the Finder and renames the Trash to whatever you want. It may be most useful to pedantic British users, like myself, who have been lamenting the loss of the Wastesbasket since OS 9.

Read the rest of the article for the how-to...

Renaming the trash can:
  1. You need to have both QuickConvert and ResEdit and be reasonably comfortable with their use. Then either boot into OS 9 or log in as root.

  2. Find the file System/ Library/ Core Services/ Finder.app/ Contents/ Resources/ English.lproj/ Localized.rsrc

  3. Firstly back this file up, or the whole Finder if you like.

  4. Drop this file onto the QuickConvert icon, and then drop it onto ResEdit. The resource window will appear.

  5. Now open the MENU resource and double click on 128. Simply change the text of 'Trash' where it occurs to whatever you want it to be. This will change the name as it appears in the Finder menu (142 is the debug menu and is unnecessary to change).

  6. The main and most cumbersome part is now to open the STR# resource. Open the resources 4500, 5500, 5501, 5503, 5600, 5601, 5700, 6800, 6802, 6803, 6804 and 7500 alternately, seeking out instances of the word Trash and altering it to your chosen name.

  7. Save the file and be sure to drop it back onto QuickConvert.
Next time you log in there will be a nicely renamed Trash all over the system.

Obviously this hint is fairly time consuming but unlike previous Mac OS versions Apple tend not to update these Finder resources with every service release, so you don't have to repeat the process each time you update from, say, 10.1.3 to 10.1.4. My Wastebasket has remained as such from 10.1 to 10.1.4.

OS X capable resource editors
Authored by: etrepum on May 26, '02 04:32:36PM
Resorcerer is probably the most complete resource editor I've used on OS X, even has the AppleEvent stuff. It definitely has a price associated with it, and it's kinda funky on OS X. But in any case, it does what it's supposed to do and it's been pretty useful to me. It saves you all the trouble of swapping the data and resource forks and running a classic app.

Am I missing something? What's wrong with calling it Trash?

wastebasket is better. Don't worry, it's the EU metric system that baffles your :-)

Although I'm a non-english speaker, I must say I've always found 'thrash' a rather ugly word to display on something as beautifull as a mac desktop.

What was wrong with wastebasket as it used to be called on British English systems? It's not the only offender since OS9, centre, colour, grey and a couple of others are now aslo spelt US style. What's wrong with properly localised resources? Is it that difficult? That said, I never undersood wastebasket either as a localisation. Bin or Rubbish would have been more appropriate in English.

In pre-X systems the icon certainly looked like a trash can. But in X it has beome a beautiful Wastebasket (just like one of those wire-mesh wastebaskets you can buy in Ikea!).

So let's call it that. :-)

Changing the Dock

You can go one step further by changing the Dock use of "Trash" and "Empty the Trash" by following much the same procedure:

Find the files System/ Library/ Core Services/ Dock/ Contents/ Resources/ English.lproj/ DockMenus.plist & InfoPlist.strings. (Might be worth making BACKUPS of the originals.)

If you have Developers Tools installed open these files with Property List Editor. If not you could use something like BBedit Lite or even TextEdit. Once opened modify all instances of "Trash" to your chosen name.

Save and Logout and the Dock will also be correct.
