Batch update image preview icons Apps
While copying a CD full of images to my hard drive, I noticed all the thumbnails were the old 16x16 format of OS 9. I wanted to change them to the 128x128 format to get a better preview option in OS X, but I couldn't find a hint for it on the web or here. However, a little investigating paid off.

Apparently Graphic Converter (see Hall of Fame Apps box at left) does this operation quite easily. Go to File -> Convert and then navigate to the folder containing the files whose icons you wish to update. Select all (Command A) and then click on Icon/Preview.

All the files you have selected will be updated to the 128x128 icon preview. Be sure to set the icon size for your window to the maximum to get the full effect.

DropIcon does this nicely too. It doesn't do much but it does it well.

Also good is Pic2Icon, which can add dog-ears, shadows, black borders, different antialiasing levels, and can even make icons out of QuickTime movies and PDFs. It is, in a word, sweet.

Try the latest version of Picturesque. It automatically creates custom Finder icons for every folder you visit, and a lot more.

WARNING - Watch out for Picturesque
Authored by: paulio on May 06, '02 09:34:43PM

Picturesque modifies all your picture files.

Picturesque will CHANGE the modification date of EVERY file in EVERY folder that it displays. Now I can't find out which files I modified in Photoshop last month because that information has been destroyed. Every single picture file that I have is marked as modified today.

Three hours after my email to them, they fixed the problem and posted a new beta. It doesn't get any better than that.

Thumbnails (previews) vs Icons

You don't get as nice of a preview with an icon (or even a 128x128 preview icon) as you do by creating a preview. I use Graphic Converter to create a preview with size=200, compress as JPEG (80%), sharpen preview. This produces nice, rich, big previews. I leave the icons alone (generic).
