I have looked for a way to scan with my Canon 1240 without using Word or PowerPoint in X. With the current Canon beta drivers, I have only managed to scan with Word X. I downloaded the Epson Scan to File release to see if it was TWAIN based, which would mean that it "could" work with the Canon drivers.
I downloaded the drivers for the 1240 Epson by chance, as my Canon is also named 1240. I do not think it makes any difference as I would not use the TWAIN driver itself but the "scan to file" utility. Previous to this I had installed the Beta Canon drivers.
Installed the program as well as the TWAIN drivers. I then went to /Library -> Application Support -> TWAIN -> TWAIN Data Sources and renamed the "ScanGear CS-U 6.2" file to "EPSON TWAIN 5". Now I can scan with my Canon 1240 by launching "Epson Scan to File" without having to use any other application.
The scan results are not so good as in e.g. PowerPoint; there seems to be a raster in the pictures which I can not get rid of by changing the quality or filetype.
[Editor's note: Untested locally, but I thought this may help some people...]
