Debugging a Word v.X crash problem Desktop
For some time, I'd been battling with Word 'Unexpectedly Quitting' on me as it launched. The only help I could find was on the Microsoft Support site where it is suggested that Toast, a corrupted Normal template, or corrupted fonts might be the problem.

I had tried deleting font directories (as suggested) and also had replaced all my fonts from a friend's computer - to no avail. On a tip, I created a new user, logged in and found that Word worked perfectly. This meant that the problem was somewhere in Word's user settings for my primary user.

I dug down and found Word keeps two files in
/Users/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/
called Word Font Substitutes and Word Settings (10). I deleted both of these and Word started perfectly, re-generating the files. After closer analysis I discovered that it was Word Settings (10) which had caused the problem.

Word Fonts etc.

Yep,
I noticed that sometimes there's a little trouble with the fonts
in an "OS 9" System Folder. If you move them out of there
you're probably better off. Apply your fonts as needed. You can tell
if the font problems exist if NONE of the Office apps (except entourage)
work.

Funny, but font handling has always been a problem with MS Office.
My advice: use fonts sparingly!

Word Fonts etc.

I have an even worse problem with office... launch any office app and ALL apps including the finder quit. If I try again, everything quits again but this time the Finder won't come up again. I tried trashing every MS file in my prefs folder to no avail and getting rid of all the fonts in my ~/Library/Fonts folder. In a dummy user it worked fine so It seems the problem lies within my user's files. Any ideas? it seems weird that in an OS such as OS X every app quits.

Value of another user...

Where I work, we have found creating another user for troubleshooting purposes to be valuable, and this tip points that up.

It's good for splitting the problem into two halves: does the problem lie with the local files of the user, or is it more endemic to the system itself? I recommend trying it before doing other more drastic things--in fact, I keep a non-priv dummy user account on my box for just this reason, as well as testing the limits of a non-priv user vs. a priv user.

Debugging Word v.X crash

It appears there are many reasons Word crashes on launch. Mine was a persistent problem that seemed to be "fixed" (for several days) by tossing various preferences files in users/<name>/library/preferences/ then the microsoft world plist file, and then some more files a folder deeper, in /microsoft, whree I deleted any preferences associated with "Word." But several days later the crash-on-launch returned. This time (after hours of research) I went into applications/microsoft office x/templates and deleted the file called "normal." The crash has stopped...for the time being...will report back after several days.
