Reduce startup time for non-networked machines

If your mac is not on a network one thing that will speed up the boot time in OSX is to manually set the IP address. The system will spend less time "Initializing network" and result in a faster boot time. This doesn't effect any dial-up service because that is on a different port.

[Editor's note: I haven't tried this myself. I assume that the IP address should be placed in the Ethernet area of the Networking preferences panel, but have not verified that. Clarifying comments from those without networks are welcomed!]
