Photo Editing With Preview and Grab Apps
I bought a cheap digital camera, and the software for it was all for OS 9. After a few weeks, I figured out that with the combination of Preview, and Grab, I could get most of the functionality I needed.

I download the photos from the camera, and then open them in Preview. It is then possible to "resize" the image in Preview by zooming in and out and rotate the image also. Then, use Grab like a cropping tool.

[Sudo Editor's Note: Although this method of image manipulation is easily out done by the free iPhoto, I found it an interesting exercise in the creative use of the tools found in OS X. Preview also allows you to easily flip the image horizontally or vertically.]

Another no-charge piece of Mac OS X software to add to the collection.

BTW, I believe it's useful to reserve the term "free software" for software that's truly free in Stallman's sense (http://www.gnu.org). Then we all know what we're talking about. This stuff is no-charge software, sometimes referred to as FREE!!! software (if the manufacturer insists on using the word in his promos).

BTW and apropos, is anyone else out there confused by the name Christian Vicks has given his "iPod Free File SynX 2.3"? It's actually shareware.

Image Capture for Video

Another tip in this vein...

If your camera can take video clips, you can use Image Capture to download them from the camera.

This works on my Kodak, anyway, I imagine it would work with other cameras as well.
