Customized icons vary between OS 9 and OS X System
My hard drive is partitioned into three partitions - one being 700MB which I use as a "disk image" to make bootable Mac repair CDs. If you setup your icons in OS 9.x and then bootup into X (using another partition) the icons can be set to be DIFFERENT than when you're booted into OS 9.x!

This is quite cool because I now have two distinct looks. When I boot from the CD it looks one way, and when I am in OS X it looks completely different - including Finder window colors!

This is basically worthless.

The whole point of macosxhints is the sharing of information. As in: this is what I did and **this is how I did it**!

So maybe my next hint will be: I found this nifty keyboard combination that results in a Preview display of a naked Condoleeza Rice.

You'd get to guess how I did it! Assuming you'd want to ...

Duh ...

While you're right, I came across this same feature. Just paste the new icons while in OS X over the old icons. When you boot back into os 9 the old icons will still be there.

Jeez, and I thought the idea was to share information about X that others might not know.
Jacka$$es like you ruin things for everyone.

I think the critique was that you didn't really say "how" to take advantage of your tip. You may have assumed that everyone knows how to manipulate icons to achieve the effect you described.

The comment from phlbbrtn may have been a little harsh, but don't lose his valid message in the medium. I just don't think that he was criticizing you for submitting a tip and sharing that info, just the completeness of the info shared.

My $0.02.

On the other hand, it is very unlikely that someone will be reading Mac OS X Hints in the first place if they don't even know how to change the icon of a volume!
