Drag mailboxes out of mail.app Apps
Last night I was loading up an external hard drive with stuff I'd like to look at over the next week or so. I wanted to take one of my mail.app mailboxes with me, and I knew I could do it from the command line using "cp". But I was wondering if it was possible within Mail.

Not only is it possible, it's incredibly easy. Just drag the mailbox (or mailboxes) that you'd like to copy from the Mail window to the destination location in a Finder window, and Mail will export the entire contents of the mailbox(es) that you have selected.

I'm not sure if you can drag them back in or not. I didn't want to risk my functional Mail installation, so I'll experiment with that piece of it this week on the iBook! If not, it should be possible to simply place it in the correct location to have it visible again in the Mail program. I'll post a follow-up comment after I do some experimenting!

Backing up your mailboxes is good for transferring them, but here's another (somewhat obvious) thought... I discovered this one when I accidentally deleted all my local mailboxes, but discovered that the folders I had under my iTools account were still there. Much like my Hotmail (R.I.P.) in Entourage or OutlookE, all of it is stored at mac.com. Now really, instead of dragging it to a local folder in your mailbox drawer, why not just make a folder under your iTools account, and drag it there instead? Therefor, the next time you accidentally forget to back that up (yeah, yeah.... you can all laugh in this direction), it will be ready and waiting for you when you get back online.

Forgot one thing... When I tried re-loading my mailboxes that I DID back up, it did worked only if I put them in the correct folder. If I remember correctly, it was ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/

Sorry for the re-post.

An important note though is if you have a large IMAP mailbox on a server the above hint does not work. What is copied to the external file is just the contents of the local cache for that mailbox, which is often just header data and not all of the actual messages.

Is there a way to move AOL Personal Filing Cabinet saved emails to Mail? I'm switching from AOL to another service provider and will use Mail as the email interface. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
