Change the desktop image with an iPhoto Desktop
If you have iPhoto open and the Desktop system prefs panel open, you can select any photo and drag it to the Desktop pref pane's 'image well' to change the desktop picture.

Drag & Drop Desktop Picture

You can use the Finder to drag and drop an image file into the "Picture Well" as well. I do so regularly.

There's no need to use iPhoto at all.

Drag & Drop Desktop Picture

Maybe no *need*, but while you're in iPhoto you get to see all your images at once - and Finder doesn't show icons for all images. Sure makes things a lot easier to know it can be done from within iPhoto.
