OS X 10.1.2 update online System
Tonight, Apple released the OS X 10.1.2 update. This substantial (30mb) update includes a ton of bug fixes, including a fix for the contextual menu bug in column view mode. I installed the updater last night, and all seems fine so far!

I've appended the contents of the "What's New" box from the update dialog box (did you know you can copy and paste that text? I didn't until I tried it!) into the remainder of this article if you'd like to get a quick look at what's new before you install. This is by no means a complete list, but it's a start.

The 10.1.2 update delivers improvements and new functionality, as well as expanded peripheral support for Mac OS X. Enhancements include:

- Updated and new USB and FireWire device support, including FireWire-based digital cameras

- PC Card storage devices, including media readers

- IrDA modem support for FireWire-based PowerBook models

- Audio, Display, and Speech improvements

- Networking and Printing improvements

- AirPort v2.0

- Apache web server v1.3.22

- AppleScript v1.8

Mac OS X 10.1.2 and FireWire
Authored by: Vivelajoie on Dec 21, '01 01:40:54PM

Well, i gained access to my Umax FireWire scanner through Umax MagicScan for OS X Beta with this update. BUT i lost access to my 22gig VST FireWire drive? System Profiler sees my drive in the list of volumes and devices. I have VST's latest firmware revision, still, it's gone into oblivion. I reported the problem with VST and they are working on it.

Mac OS X 10.1.2 and FireWire

I don't think your VST problem is endemic to the update; my VST 14GB (the hideously noisy one) with rev 56 firmware works just dandy. You've probably checked this possibility already but just in case: did you have encryption or password protection on the drive? If so there's a utility on VST's site that'll let you use a secured drive in OSX.

BTW, can you tell me where you got the MagicScan beta? I've been looking for them to come out with something like that but I can't find diddly about any OSX apps on UMAX's site. Thx.

Nice F12 key fix...
Authored by: robg on Dec 22, '01 08:55:03AM

Many people complained about the F12 eject key prior to 10.1.2, and it seems that Apple 'fixed' this in the 10.1.2 update by simply disabling it. However, they've actually implemented a fairly elegant fix. The F12 key will still eject your CDs, but you need to hold it down for about a second before it works. So now accidental presses are ignored, and yet the key still does what it did before.

Nice F12 key fix...
Authored by: 128K Mac on Dec 29, '01 01:52:23AM

Rob,

I may or may not have need for concern. I haven't used my Apple Extended II ADB keyboard with Griffin iMate adaptor since 10.1.2.

With my Apple Pro keyboard F12 broke with 10.1.2. I could leave a brick on it for an hour and it wouldn't eject a CD.

Have DVD-ROM drive in G4 DP Tower (gigabit). Would hate to lose the F12 in the old Apple Extended II because it of course has no "Eject" key. It's on loan so can't try it.

You using a different drive, maybe a CDR/RW or something? You have a later G4 machine as I recall.

Also fixes list view right-clicks

I was having problems deleting files in the list view of a finder window using the right-click shortcut. The files would always deselect. All fixed now!

Authored by: muserut on Dec 22, '01 08:21:49PM

FINALLY my usb Zip works like a charm!! files xfer i/o of the disk like a breeze, compared to the 10.1 and 10.1.1 versions that was SLOW as molases!! the insertion of a disk takes a sec or two for it to pop up on the desktop but thats minor.

10.2 rocks =)

oops
Authored by: muserut on Dec 22, '01 08:26:27PM

I meant 10.1.2 Rocks! :p

sorry for the typo

forgot to mention, i have an ext amp plugged in my audio out port, with my usb iSub running (2000 model) (the iSub plays even when the audio port is being used by the external amp-which didn't occur in 9.2.1).

iTunes and AOL instant messenger has a slight bug-anytime the chime from an IM comes through AOL with iTunes running the sub begins to distort which subsequently makes the entire audio distort-I've found by just unplugging the iSub port and replugging it corrects this, but only temporary.

some problems
Authored by: russ_jacobson on Dec 22, '01 11:34:28PM

While I thought my iBook dual USB, 500 mhz, 320 ram had no problems with 10.1.2 I seem to have been bitten by problem some report.

First my IE 5.1 now has had a couple weird episodes, in which
I get some weird behavior with the spining ball of death, inability to
quit the program and eventually a forced hard shutdown and
reboot. The third time tonight no problems but I have had to
reboot 3 times earlier in evening with IE 5.1 now it seems stable
for the moment.

I also got a weird crash and console came up when I was printing one
of my pages out of IE 5.1. I had done 3 printings ok and was doing a third
when it only printed second page and in consol I got it opening along
with a printer error window log with a mile long of code that
means nothing to me, but it was debugging error code and had some
stuff about kernal errors so I suppose the kernal panic some have seen a little with this one?

People have reported elsewhere now pasting from Classic apps to
OS X apps no longer works, the ball spins for 10-15 seconds and no
text is pasted, but apparently graphics still does??? I do not do t his muc
but in the main console log window I found the following error reported
with classic when it starts:
-------------
Mac OS X Version 10.1.2 (Build 5P48)
Classic Startup: Couldn't connect to the pasteboard. Copy and paste with external apps will not work.
------------

So I guess that means I probably have this same problem when I choose to copy and paste from classic.

The console log also has the following errors which mean nothing to me, maybe they have always been there after logins?

---------
Dec 22 18:25:40 localhost WindowServer[69]: CGXDisableUpdate: Updates disabled by connection 0x7c03 for over 1.000000 seconds

Dec 22 19:20:52 localhost WindowServer[69]: CGXDisableUpdate: Updates disabled by connection 0x2f03 for over 1.000000 seconds
---------

I also saw a post on macfixit that said something about minor errors with some ATM fonts not working now with 10.1.2 update. And now that I open my console up again to past the above what do I find below but another error related to some of my fonts:

------
Default TimeZone = America/Chicago
America/Chicago In Daylight = false
America/Chicago Uses Daylight = true
GMT In Daylight = false
GMT Uses Daylight = false
Loading image 1
Loading image 2
Loading image 3
Loading image 4
Loading image 3
------

It is repeated over and over again probably each time I do something in IE which I am working in or Entourage as I had been sending about 5 messages (about the number of times this appears interestingly enough?)

Then there is a IE 5.1 specific error that shows up:

------
epm applet started 9.37c
Dec 22 22:01:41 localhost /Applications/Internet Explorer.app/Contents/MacOS/Internet Explorer: kCGErrorIllegalArgument : CGSSetWindowAutofill: Invalid window

------

Mind you I do not know how many of the above have been going on in console during each login. Does this main console log window keep this error until I empty the log? I obviously do not do much with it nor have ever seen it except when I first explored OS X after starting to use it.

But it seems that IE is getting flakier not that it ever was good, and now I do have the problems with fonts and the pasting from classic problem implied in the consol message. So I wonder if I should have stayed with 10.1.1. I had no problems with what I do and had never had a kernal panic before with printing. (it was after this that IE got really weird by the way).

some problems
Authored by: maclaw on Dec 24, '01 12:21:01AM

the "couldn't connect to pasteboad..." line does not seem to be a consequence of 10.1.2 specifically. I had this message since at least 10.1 and it continues today (through 10.1.1 and 10.1.2). This despite several complete reinstalls (of both the classic and OS X environments). I can't pin down an origin of the problem but I have generally been able to cut/paste text between classic/native despite this console message. in fact, i talked to apple about this some months ago and neither I nor the service tech could copy binary information (e.g. graphics) from classic to native but we could both copy text.

IE 5.1 just crashed again
Authored by: russ_jacobson on Dec 22, '01 11:47:59PM

Well I am not sure if this is of interest, if I should report to apple or someone? I am leaving for Christmas Vacation so I am not sure if it is worth reporting elsewhere. But I saw the errors with fonts and tested my Entourage, nothing showed up when I sent a 6th message. So I thought hmmmm. maybe the fonts are also a IE issue and I wanted to see if the error were with IE so I just did a refresh of it. And it totally crashed and stopped. Now mind you I get a few of those from time to time, but it is one here or there especially with weird java on some web pages and such. It seems more unstable tonight. Although I just reran it again and no problems I got another big error report. I am not a Unix guru just a long time mac user who likes OS X and have used our suns for many years. Here is the text of the error report. Is this the so-called kernal panic people talk about or just an old fashiond IE crash that one has from time to time?

Some of you may find this of interest, I think the IE problems that are increasing many fold tonight seem to be happening since my upgrade of 10.1.2 late yesterday.

IE 5.1 just crashed again

Russ,

My I.E. 5.1 has been running like a champ with 10.1.2 and I've backed off of use of OmniWeb quite a bit.

You mention something about fonts and Entourage which I don't understand. I've also had no problems with Office X, including Entourage (other than the well known slow-to-quit bug), except a brief one with fonts.

You don't happen to have Classic running when you have this font problem, or whatever, with Entourage? Same question for I.E. if any Office X app is running in background. (or maybe if one isn't?)

It's my understanding that Office X apps load every font in the OS9 System Folder if Classic is running. Notice I didn't say Fonts folder. "Every" font includes those in Fonts (Disabled) and Applications Support (if you have any Adobe applications), or any other apps, including some folders created by some font managers.

Office X reportedly complies fully with Apple guidelines on fonts and is *very* particular about not liking old fonts, fonts which don't comply with Apple standards (freeware stuff especially), etc. etc.

I was getting some weird font displays in I.E., sometimes Entourage and Word, so cleaned house with my OS9/Classic system folder. I had already uninstalled Office 2001, but I still removed the Fonts and Fonts (Disabled) folders (which may have had some Microsoft fonts) as the Adobe fonts I have seem to be OK, but I've found some old Adobe Type 1 fonts, circa 1993, that Office doesn't like in Classic (nor installed in OS X ). I simply replaced the Fonts folder by extracting all the Apple fonts from the OS9.1 Upgrade with TomeViewer and dumped them in the new Fonts folder for OS9/Classic.

My approach to creating a new Fonts folder might be slight overkill, but it only took a few minutes. As my user name suggests, I've had Macs a while too and I have a lot of *old* ones that somehow migrate into my current classic Mac OS Fonts folder from time to time, so it was the simplest way to clean house IMO. :)

Since I.E. and Entourage are two of the apps I never quit, and I always have Classic running, my temporary problems had to be in one of the Fonts folders in Classic/OS9. When I had some strange displays in Word X using some old Adobe Type 1 fonts installed in OSX that was an easy problem to solve.

Success with SCSI CD-RW
Authored by: Joachim on Dec 27, '01 12:38:40PM

Seems that 10.1.2 allows burning CDs on a SCSI burner now. My Yamaha 8424 didn't work before under 10.1.1 even though I had SCSI CDRW Helper installed. Tried it now just out of couriosity and burnt a CD-RW successfully, using Apple's DiskCopy utility. This is on a G4 450 MP, Adaptec 2906 SCSI card.
