If you use AIM (America Online's Instant Messenger), you should give Adium a try. This Cocoa replacement for AIM has a nice feature set, is completely free, has source code available, takes up minimal screen real estate, and is updated regularly.

Not to mention...
...that Adam is one of the most friendly and responsive developers I've ever worked with. If you come across a bug or annoyance - or, better yet, a suggestion for the next version - send it his way. I can't wait to see some of the things we've discussed show up in the next major revision. ;)
Fire is also an excellent alternative
Can't say much about Adium (since I haven't used it), but I will give it a try.
