Try Adium as an AIM replacement Apps
If you use AIM (America Online's Instant Messenger), you should give Adium a try. This Cocoa replacement for AIM has a nice feature set, is completely free, has source code available, takes up minimal screen real estate, and is updated regularly.

Thanks to WCityMike for reminding me about this great little program!

...that Adam is one of the most friendly and responsive developers I've ever worked with. If you come across a bug or annoyance - or, better yet, a suggestion for the next version - send it his way. I can't wait to see some of the things we've discussed show up in the next major revision. ;)

Fire is also an excellent alternative

Can't say much about Adium (since I haven't used it), but I will give it a try.

I did want to put a plug in for Fire (available via VersionTracker)... it's an excellent alternative to AIM, also.

Try Proteus also

I saw the tip about Adium today and couldn't help but write in about Proteus, another multi-protocol IM app for Mac OS X.

I've used just about every client out there (AOL, MSN, Adium, Fire) and haven't been really happy with any of them. I downloaded Proteus today and am very, very happ with it. It works reliably and has a lot features.....the kind that strike you as "why didn't I think of that?"

I really wanted to like Fire & Adium but just couldn't bring myself to feel comfortable with either (either interface or bugs).

Check it out at http://www.indigofield.com/

Standard disclaimer: no affiliation, just very satisfied.
