Comments as a replacement for labels Desktop
ive seen a ton of people gripe about the lack of labels in os x, so i hope this helps those that really need them.

1. set your windows to list view
2. pop up the view options panel (apple-j)
3. click the show comments checkbox
4. notice that the comments column appears in the list view
5. label files--type comments in the comments field

you can also write a few applescript droplets to automate entering comments. i have three droplets that set comments: "new", "current", "completed".

[Editor's note: There's a good discussion on this very subject over on the MacFixIt Forums, including a couple of posted AppleScripts to make it easy to 'batch comment' files.]

Enter comments where?

OK, it's easy enough to display thecomments field, but how do you enter text into the comments? In BeOS I would just display whatever arbitrary attributes I wanted, click in the field and start typing, just like a database. Clicking in the Comments field in Finder does nothing, and I don't see anything in the Finder menus. What am I missing?

Use AppleScript ... or ...

The AppleScripts are the slickest way to do this, otherwise you need to highlight the item, do File -> Show Info, and then type the comment in the comments box in the General Information pop-up.

With the AppleScripts, just drag and drop onto the script and type the comment.

Regarding Comments - 9 vs. X
Authored by: esyring on Nov 01, '01 02:27:31AM

Does anyone know how to access 9 Comments when in X?

From the Apple Knowledgebase:
Mac OS X 10.x, Mac OS 9.x: Info Comments Do Not Appear

Article ID:

Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.x do not display each others Info window comments.

Comments that you typed in the Info window for an item do not appear.

Products affected
Mac OS X 10.x
Mac OS 9.x

The Get Info command in the Mac OS 9 Finder and the Show Info command in the Mac OS X Finder both open an Info window that displays various facts about the selected item. The Info window also has a Comments field in which you can type notes about the selected item.

Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X store file Comments separately. Comments entered in the Info window when started up from Mac OS 9 do not appear in the Info window when started up from Mac OS X (and vice versa).

This is a known behavior of Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X and does not indicate any issue with your computer's software.
