Display centimeters in Cocoa apps' rulers Apps
To use centimeters in the ruler instead of inches in Cocoa applications, in the file .GlobalPreferences.plist located in ~/Library/Preferences/ add:
To see the effect, open TextEdit, make sure you have a Rich Text format document, and then hit command-R to show the ruler.

[Editor's note: I have not tested this, but I'm sure it works. To revert to inches, simply remove the entries from the .GlobalPreferences.plist file.]

non-US settings in page setup/ menu bar clock?
Authored by: mpetit on Oct 12, '01 04:33:57PM

O.k. now we know how to set the metric system for rulers. Thanks a lot; this works very well, at least for TextEdit.

Any hints on how to set centimeters in the page setup (inches are shown even when A4 is choosen)? Or how to change the date setting to non-US in the menu bar clock? The menu bar clock seems to ignore the setting in the system preferences.

Also Points, Picas, Inches...

That's great! You can also set the string to "Points", "Picas", "Inches"...

BTW, I prefer using PropertyListEditor (Developer Tools) to edit the property lists. It is very easy to add a "New Sibling", name it, select its class and enter its value.

This really should be standard!

There really should really be a control panel for this. But it is great knowing that there is a way of getting this by any means.

Display centimeters in Cocoa apps' rulers
Authored by: megus on Aug 13, '03 02:59:34AM

Just wanted to let anybody else who didn't get this hint to work to know that I found an alternate way of achieving the same thing. This is how I solved it:
1. Open System Preferences and choose International.
2. Open up the Numbers tab and set Measurement System to Standard.
3. Quit System Preferences.
4. Relaunch and revert to Metric in International->Measurement System.
5. Quit System Preferences

The ruler units in TextEdit should now be Centimeters.

Display centimeters in Cocoa apps' rulers

Could anyone help me figure out why TextEdit insists on using the rule in inches even when my regional settings are set to the UK and measurements are in metric? The ruler in Word:Mac is in centimeters - so I'm inclined to think there's some disconnect between system prefs and TextEdit, but I'm also inclined to believe that there is a simple reason that I'm overlooking. Thoughts?
