10.1 and stall on startup System
Ever since I upgraded my Powerbook to 10.1, I've been experiencing a hang on boot-up when the OS indicates "Starting Directory Services". This delay has been as long as five minutes or more.

I wasn't getting this on my G4 tower, so I knew that it wasn't necessarily a 10.1 thing, but something that 10.1 brought out. I looked through my message logs (/var/log/message.log) and saw that lookupd was attempting to contact a lot of other machines and failing (lookupd is a software agent that acts as a network information broker).

I also remembered that I had been fooling around with lookupd, trying to set up an ad filter for web browsing and had added a directory called "locations" in my Netinfo database as part of that. I removed the directory using Netinfo Manager and now my Powerbook boots and shuts down quicker than it ever did, even in OS 9.

[Editor's note: This specific tip may not affect a lot of users, but the general tip is to make sure you check the log files to see what's happening to your machine, wether it's a startup stall or any other abnormal behavior.]

Netinfo different in 10.0.4 and 10.1?
Authored by: beef on Oct 03, '01 07:51:15AM

A bit different, but I used a utility called hostal or something like that when I was using 10.0.4, which made some modifications to Netinfo database.

The utility doesn't work with 10.1, and the changes it made caused the same problem at startup. Removing the changes made in the database seemed to have solved the problem...

I dunno what exactly in netinfo changed, but I guess you need to be careful when you add/modify your database... things that worked in 10.0.4 might not work anymore

Use locations
Authored by: ggliddy on Oct 03, '01 09:55:24AM

I had a similar problem with my Powerbook starting up if it was not connected to a network, it may be unrelated. I created a location called "off" where I deleted all network ports in the network control panel. I would switch to this location if I would be traveling and not connected to a network. It seems to restart extremely quickly under these conditions.

controlling lookupd
Authored by: cyberassassin on Oct 04, '01 10:05:53AM

So how does one control lookupd? I have a PowerBook, and use a modem for connectivity. the DNS_Agent of lookupd is always trying and failing to find a few IP Addresses. I found the addresses in the NetInfo DB, deleted them, and now the same agent in trying to find new IP addresses. How can you control this renegade (IMHO) process, especially when one uses a modem for connectivity? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Brian

indefinite stall on Ti500 and lombard 333
Authored by: saitan on Oct 12, '01 12:23:31AM

i seem to be having the same problem, on my 500 mhz Ti and 333 mhz lombard. difference is, though, never _ever_ boot. so i can't use netinfo manager to fix anything. is it possible to edit out the offending information in a text editor? i'm looking at /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb ...one of those Store.* files perhaps? i'm really trying to avoid having to reconfigure and add users on both boxes...any help is greatly appreciated.
--saitan

btw, the 533 i have right now took the 10.1 update fine. since it's not mine, i hadn't been messing with it as much...not sure what i did to the other two to bring this about...

indefinite stall on Ti500 and lombard 333

i spent some time digging into this problem. it seems to stem from problems when making changes to the Netinfo dbase machines records. for example, i added another "name" property to the /machines/localhost value. the new values:

ip_address 127.0.0.1
name (my domain name)
name localhost
serves ./local

after i made these changes, i rebooted. then the machine hung on initializing Directory Services.

i checked the DirectoryService.server.log before and after the changes made above and found a difference. before the changes above, the Directory Service is the first thing to get called to start up. Next, the plugin "Search" is called, and loads successfully.

However, after making the changes above it seems that the Search plugin gets called before the Directory Services are initialized, which then hangs the machine for 5-10 mins. After this timeout interval the Directory Services (and the Search plugin) get called and are initialized successfully.

Can anyone shed some light on why these mods to the Netinfo database are fudging the load order of the Directory Services and the Search plugin?

help please,

ppmax

indefinite stall on Ti500 and lombard 333

Hi,

I also have a Ti500 and use it at both my office and at home. When I am at work my system works just fine but when at home connected to my network my machine also stalls on the starting directory services when it boots. If I disconnect it from my home network it boot fine? But after I get it booted and reconnect to my network and go to terminal and try and do a directory list it will hang for 5 mins or so.

I guess my question is have you gotten any more info on this problem? I have been searching Apple's web site with little success on finding a solution.

Thanks for any info you can give me!

Albert
