Solution for CD/DMG mounting problems! System
Eric Poelzl found the solution for those of us that can't mount CDs or DMG files. He has posted it in Apple Discussions. Open NetInfo Manager (in Applications/Utiltiies) and see if there is a Unknown User (click on 'Users' in the Directory Browser area). If not, you have to add it back in. Create a new entry with the following settings:

realname: Unknown User
expire: 0
name: unknown
uid: 99
passwd: *
home: /dev/null
change: 0
shell: /dev/null
gid: 99

Save your changes and you should be able to mount your CD's and DMG files again.

[Editor's note: I have not tried this myself, and be careful working in NetInfo; if you mess something up, you could make your system unusable.]

OS 10.04-Disk Copy error 192
Authored by: wafa on Aug 01, '01 03:52:50AM

Since I installed OS 10.04 and I am getting always an error message every time I attempt to open a disk image using Disk Copy. It always gives the message "Failed to mount due to error 192. Unknown error 192". Iam running OS 10.04 on PowerBook G3 Wall Street 466Powerlogix Blue Chip upgrade/Ram320/HD20 GB. I had no trouble before upgrading to 10.04.

I tried your tip as described by Eric Poelzl but no success. Any other advises or tips are very welcome.

DMG
Authored by: Jay on Aug 01, '01 12:32:52PM

Interestingly, I hadn't experienced this problem until yesterday. I downloaded the new version of OmniWeb from their site, and it wouldn't mount. DiskCopy would launch, but do nothing, no errors, nothing. I tried the NetInfo tip, but the user already existed. I trshed that copy, downloaded it from my iDisk and it worked fine. The files were the same size, so I can't explain what happened.

tried it and failed
Authored by: beatnik23 on Aug 15, '01 08:37:32PM

So I followed the suggestion. It still didn't fix the problem. I posted a request for help in the Apple discussions room on the support site lems1 sent me back to this article and some prick tried to send me to the command line and tell me he has alredy posted the fix in discussions but it isn't there. I am relatively intelligent and do go to apple first for help but telling me I haven't researched the problem is enough to make me quit my mug and exschange my iBook for a Dell. Does anyone have a suggestion or a URL with a list of tips other than this article?

mounting multi-session cd
Authored by: lostman on Dec 02, '02 05:20:28AM

When i insert a multi-session cd (iso9660) the finder
sees only the last session.
i Tried to use disc_image but it makes an error 5.
A partial solution, is to create an uncompressed image
with read/write rules
then to mount it before disc image has finished,
in this case i loose some informations in the session but
i can access all but least files in the first session
still don't know what to do if there is more than 2 sessions

Solution for CD/DMG mounting problems!
Authored by: agentx312 on Jul 25, '03 02:36:50AM

I'm having the same problem. It's a relatively new problem. my os x 10.1.x won't read hfs+ cd's either. I probably deleted the unknown user, trying to keep secure, but i recreated it. Perhaps installing updates to Office X... Any ideas would be appreciated

here's the solution. you also need the user nobody. I just duplicated the user 'unknown' and changed the name and realname fields.

realname: nobody
expire: 0
name: nobody
uid: 99
passwd: *
home: /dev/null
change: 0
shell: /dev/null
gid: 99

Thanks. Your solution helped me with my problem. I wiped out unknown user, so in Acounts preference, nothing was displayed. Your solution put Accounts back into preferences.
