I have a supported HP inkjet printer connected to my PowerBook via USB. The printer works great in OS X (especially with the new drivers), but I cannot print from classic. I am wondering if there is some majic set of extensions that need to be turned on or off to get something to print from Classic. It seems as if it the print job hangs in Print Monitor (Classic), and can not be passed on the Print Center (OS X). Has anyone figured this out yet?
Thanks for any help, Brian

Printing in Classic
Brian,
Printing in Classic
Also Brian,
Printing to HP with Classic
try this! (works with my HP 935) When you are ready to print, go to the drop down menu in print window, and select background printing. Now click on 'foreground'. I couldn't get mine to print at all in Classic until I tried using foreground. You may have to reselect foreground each time you print, or at least after each restart or new login. I think that one does not have access to the desktop printing software under classic, so when 'foreground' is selected, the desktop printing software is bypassed. I hope 'they' fix this as updates to OS X continue!
Printing to HP with Classic
If you want to print in the background all you have to do is increase the memory allocation of the "PrintMonitor" extension in your Classic system folder. I use about 4000k, but that is probably excessive (I didn't want to take the time to figure out what minimum setting would actually work, so I just cranked it way up). Sometimes the PrintMonitor still won't launch, so I put in in my Dock and if it doesn't launch automatically within a few seconds of spooling to disk I just launch in manually. This works fine. Also be sure you've got the latest "classic" version of the printer drivers, since there could be issues with older ones.
Hint worked great!!
Thanks for the foreground prinitng hint. Works like a charm. Since I don't need to do much printing from classic, it is no problem. Finally no more switching back and forth. All OS X all the time.... |
