I recently stumbled upon a very nice minimalist launcher app for OS X. It seems to be from the OPENSTEP days and has now made its way to Apple's latest consumer OS. It's set up so that you just hit command-space and then start typing in the name of what you want to launch, then press retrun when it's selecting what you want. Very fast, very minimal. It's called LaunchBar and can be found at:

LaunchBar: A Lifesaver
I'm a recovering QuicKeys junkie, and my recovery isn't going all that well. LaunchBar is quite a wonderful substitute, as it allows me to call up apps, files, folders, and even URLs without removing my fingers from the keyboard. And I like how it "learns" my shortcuts, and that it is quite unobtrusive.
Love this app!
Not only can you launch apps from LaunchBar, it let's you launch URLs, email addresses and even traverse your entire file system! I don't even need to use the dock anymore to switch among apps or use Finder windows to get to files! I paid for it within 20 minutes of installing it.
incredibly impressive.
LaunchBar really is fairly astonishing. One feature I've recently discovered is the ability to connect it to a contact list (various options exist) so that you can use abbreviations to initiate an email message to someone from any application... whether or not your email software is running.
More Ram
I finally got a certainty in my life: you won't enjoy the beauty of Mac OS X without a ton of Ram. Luckily this is a good moment to buy Ram at low price. With 1,5GB on my G4, now I'm a happy man.
Launchar IS my OS
This app is simply amazing.
LaunchBar is a masterpiece
Amazing! It seems to read your mind… I'll never use a Mac without it! |
