Mail List/Preview window toggle Apps
Just a little quickie (but the little ones are usually the nicest!)...double click on the square just above the scrollbars but to the right of the message header titles (e.g. Date & Time on my std install), and Mail toggles from Preview Message to List view (or I guess more accurately, toggles preview off and on). Same happens if you double click on the separator bar between the lists and the preview.

Still a little light on functionality, and a bit slow when you have more than one mailbox (try 6+), but hey it's only a Beta oops i mean 1.0 release.

This no longer works as of 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

While the square no longer works, the double-click on the divider does, which is fine for my needs.

The loss actually really bothers me--I find the circle at the bottom a lot more fiddly to hit on my macbook. Plus I'm usually selecting messages and sorting columns up at the top of the screen to begin with.

But I was consoled by discovering the hint that you can use option-delete to delete a mail message without opening/reading the next message in the list, which is normally why I am opening and closing the viewer to begin with (to delete messages from the list without reading the ones next to them). The hint is here http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2009102312250348
